A couple who’d missed out on “heaps” of houses at auctions were finally successful this week after securing Coast host Jason’s Reeves’ house.
Reeves and his wife Louise scored $1.26 million for their four-bedroom home at 56A Marlborough Avenue in Glenfield, on Auckland’s North Shore as 15 bidders duked it out.
But the sale was not without its dramas as a mix of in-room and on-the phone bidders placed raised their hands.
“It looked like Wall Street, agents on phone in booths. I’d never seen an auction before,” says Reeves

“Bidding started at $900,000 then stalled at $950,000 and we thought ‘oh my god, this is it’ when Tim [Oburn, auctioneer] started ‘first call, second call’.
“But then I was happy all night because it started going up in 10,000s then 5,000s. I couldn’t believe the number of people bidding.”

Reeves’ success nearly came a cropper when Coast co-host Sam Wallace pranked him on a series of ads the pair created for each other's houses. Wallace and partner Sarah Bowman sold their house at auction earlier this month, needing a bigger place after finding out they were having twins.
Clearly listeners did not take Wallace at his opening words “Is there something strange in your neighbourhood?” in the ad, as some 97 groups looked through the house.

Ray White agent Rochelle Brinsdon, who marketed the property with Sydnee Wallace, said that the crowds were an indication of how buoyant the market is right now. The successful buyers were a young family – much like Jason and Louise when they bought the house nine years ago – and had been looking for some time.
“There’s a lack of supply of good quality homes like this – modern, well positioned, well presented, a good family home at an amazing location.”

Reeves said they only initially planned on staying for a couple of years in the house, which was newly built for them and still looks as good as new, but enjoyed living there so much it has extended to nine.
“We’re ready to move on but we’ll miss this place – it’s been a wonderful family home,” he says, adding that they have until January settlement to find themselves a new place.
